What is the furniture bonus?

The furniture bonus is a 50% tax deduction on new furniture and major appliances (such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.) for renovating properties.

You can deduct 50% of the price of:

New furniture: beds, wardrobes, dressers, bookshelves, desks, tables, chairs, sofas, armchairs, mattresses, lighting fixtures, etc.

Major appliances: such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, washer-dryers, dryers, dishwashers, electric stoves, microwaves, electric radiators, fans, and air conditioners. These must meet minimum energy efficiency requirements, but the purchase of appliances without energy labels is still eligible if labeling is not yet legally required.

The bonus also applies if the furniture is purchased for a different room within the same building, or if the renovation work is carried out on an annexed building.

What is excluded?

Doors, floorings (for instance, parquet), curtains, and other accessories are among the purchases not covered by the bonus. Transport and assembly costs may be included in the deduction, though.

Who has the right to the furniture bonus?

You must be undertaking qualifying renovations of a residential property, which is a single unit or part of a shared building. The renovation must start on or after January 1 of the prior year of purchasing the furniture or appliances.

Qualifying renovation work includes:

Non-qualifying works include fitting new garages or anti-theft systems (unless part of larger scope qualifying renovations). A heating boiler replacement is, however, qualifying.

You can also get the bonus for foreign purchases, if they're supported by invoice and paid using credit or debit card.

Tax deduction conditions

The furniture bonus pertains to home renovations. The tax deduction for renovations is 50% through to 2025 for principal residences, with a maximum spend of €96,000 per property. This is reduced from 2026 to 36%, and once more to 30% from 2028, with a maximum spend of €48,000 regardless of how many properties are owned.

Timeline for renovations

The bonus is for purchases made through December 31, 2025. There is no strict timeline between purchase and renovation, but renovations must have begun no earlier than January 1 of the previous year.

You must present proof of the start of the renovation—such as administrative permits or notification to health authorities. For work that doesn't need permits, a simple notarized statement is enough.

How to claim the deduction

You receive the bonus by reporting the costs in your tax return. The furniture bonus can only be received by the person who declares the renovation tax deduction. If one spouse pays for the renovation and the other for furniture, they are not eligible for the bonus.

Deduction limit for 2025

For 2025, the 50% discount is capped at a maximum spend of €5,000. If part of the costs of the renovations has been claimed the previous year, it would have to be subtracted from the deduction limit for 2025.
